📚 Glossary

Simple explanations of Minecraft and Educator Tools terms you'll encounter.


A

🎮 Adventure Mode

A game mode where players can explore and interact with objects (doors, buttons) but cannot break or place blocks. Good for tours or interactive stories.

⚙️ AFK (Away From Keyboard)

When a player is inactive or not currently playing.

📝 Assignment

A structured task created by teachers that students can submit with text and location data.


B

⚙️ Behavior Pack

An add-on file that changes how Minecraft works. Educator Tools is a behavior pack. You install it by importing the .mcpack or .mcaddon file.

🌍 Biome

A region with specific terrain, plants, and climate. Examples: forest, desert, plains, ocean, mountains.

🏗️ Block

A cube-shaped building unit. Everything in Minecraft is made of blocks (dirt blocks, stone blocks, letter blocks, etc.). Think of them like LEGO bricks.

📊 Boss Bar

The message bar that appears at the very top of the screen. Used by the Timer tool and other features to display information to all players.

C

🌍 Chunk

A 16×16 block section of the world. Minecraft loads the world in chunks. Not usually important for teachers, but explains why distant areas might not load immediately.

⚙️ Command Block

A special block that can run commands automatically. Can be enabled/disabled in World Settings.

🌍 Coordinates

The position in the world expressed as three numbers (X, Y, Z). Example: (100, 64, -200). X and Z are horizontal positions, Y is height.

🎮 Creative Mode

A game mode where players have unlimited blocks, can fly, and can't die. Perfect for building activities. Players can access all items from their inventory.


E

📖 Education

The version of Minecraft designed for classrooms. Different from regular Minecraft (Java or Bedrock Edition).

🛠️ Educator Toolbox

The special item that teachers receive automatically. Right-click it to open the menu with all classroom management tools.


F

🔒 Focus Mode

A tool that dims students' screens and shows a message. Students can't move or interact while it's active. Like an "eyes on me" button.

⚙️ Game Rule

A setting that controls how the game works. Examples: mob spawning, daylight cycle, keep inventory on death.

🎮 Gamemode

The rule set that determines what players can and can't do. Main gamemodes: Creative, Survival, Adventure, Spectator.

🎮 GM (Gamemode)

Abbreviation followed by a number: GM1 = Creative, GM0 = Survival, GM2 = Adventure, GM3 = Spectator.


H

❤️ Health

How much damage a player can take before dying. Represented by hearts at the top of the screen. Full health = 10 hearts (20 health points).

👹 Hostile Mob

A creature that attacks players. Examples: zombies, skeletons, spiders. Also called "monsters."

🎒 Hotbar

The bottom row of your inventory - the 9 slots visible at the bottom of your screen. Quick access to frequently used items. Number keys (1-9) select items.

🍖 Hunger

How much food a player has eaten. Represented by meat icons. When hunger is low, players can't sprint or regenerate health.

🎒 Inventory

The storage space where players keep items and blocks. Press E key to open. Think of it as your backpack.

⚙️ JSON

A file format used to store data and configurations. Used in custom letter blocks and advanced customization.

🔒 Lock Players

A tool that restricts how far students can move from a specific location. Creates an invisible boundary.


M

⚙️ .mcpack / .mcaddon

File extensions for Minecraft add-ons. Double-clicking these files imports them into Minecraft Education.

🐾 Mob

A moving creature in Minecraft - animals, monsters, villagers, etc. Short for "mobile."

🐾 MOB (Mobile entity)

See "Mob" above.


N

👤 Nickname

A custom display name that students can choose (with teacher approval). Replaces their default Minecraft username.


P

⚙️ Pack Manifest

A file that describes what a behavior pack contains. Used when creating or customizing packs.

🐾 Passive Mob

A creature that doesn't attack players. Examples: cows, pigs, chickens, sheep.

👤 Player

Any person in the Minecraft world - students, teachers, anyone who joins.


S

🎮 Spectator Mode

A game mode where players are invisible and can fly through walls. Used for observing without interacting. Cannot place blocks or affect the world.

🎮 Spawn (verb)

When creatures or items appear in the world. Example: "Zombies spawn at night" means zombies appear when it's dark.

🌍 Spawn Point

The location where players appear when they first join the world or after they die. Usually designated by the teacher.

🎒 Stack

A group of the same item in one inventory slot. Most items stack up to 64 (meaning you can have 64 of that item in one slot).

👤 Student

Any player who is not a teacher. Part of the "Students" team by default.

🎮 Survival Mode

A game mode where players must gather resources, can take damage, need food, and have limited items. More challenging than Creative mode.


T

👥 Team

A group of players organized together. Used to target multiple players at once with tools (teleport a team, change team gamemode, etc.).

👤 Teacher

A player with access to the Educator Toolbox and all management tools. Teachers are added to the "Teachers" team.

🚀 Teleport

Instantly moving from one location to another without walking. Like fast-travel.

W

🌍 World

The Minecraft environment where all gameplay happens. Contains terrain, buildings, players, and all blocks.


X

⭐ XP (Experience Points)

Experience points (not commonly used in classroom contexts).
